Art Displays
Kareem Tai – I created an abstract steel sculpture that takes inspiration from topography and the natural environment. The surface of the steel in my 9'x4.5' untitled work has been melted and re-formed using torch methods which create an organic and unique texture, instilling a sense of history and erosion in the material. Despite the aged look of the piece as structural composition, it has been treated with vibrant colors used in street art in an attempt to bridge the gap between formal work that exists in contemporary art spaces, and street art that is more readily accessible to the broad public.
Alair Wells - The idea for my site-specific, interactive installation for the Alley Art project came from thinking about the history of the city, of the alley, in particular and of the community involvement aspect of the project. I passed out boxes to the surrounding businesses asking people to donate items that relate to the notion of a care package. These items will then be displayed on one of the "trash" panels in the alley. I hope to present the questions: What does it mean to care? For ourselves? For this space? For each other? For our community? How can an object or group of objects portray this idea: to care?
